The first grouping of Medinan Yams were discovered by members of the Alpha Drop during the first day on the first scrounging mission post Alpha Drop. Initially these "roots" were dismissed by Colony Command as they had been identified by colonists with skills in the brewing and distillation of alcohol as being ideal for that purpose. Dr. Jael Strauss posited the starchy roots must have nutritional value (though they would have to be cooked). This was confirmed by colony botanist Zemira Lewis, who indicated they were similar to Yams and named them thus.

The vegetable has a rough skin which is difficult to peel, but which softens after heating. The skins vary in color from dark to light brown. The majority of the vegetable is composed of a much softer substance known as the "meat" which is yellow, a color caused by the presence of carotenoids. The plants are large; the vines can be as long as 10 to 12 meters (33 to 39 ft). The tubers grow at the base of the plant, weighing from 0.5 to 2 kilograms (1.1 to 4.4 lb) at the time of harvest (6 - 9 months of growth).

The nutritional value is still being studied.

Aside from being fermented and made into alcohol, the Medinan Yam is a versatile vegetable. It can be barbecued, roasted, fried, grilled, boiled, baked, smoked.
